WHAT IS THE UMA?
Innovative Research and Quality Transfer for Attractive Agriculture.
The Agricultural Mechanization Unit (UMA) is a specialized group focused on the application of advanced technologies to the agricultural sector. Led by Dr. Emilio Gil and part of the Department of Agri-Food Engineering and Biotechnology (DEAB) at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), UMA was recognized in 2018 as a Pre-consolidated Research Group by the Generalitat of Catalonia.
UMA has its own laboratory at the Agrópolis facilities, where it conducts trials and organizes technical activities. It is equipped with advanced machinery thanks to collaborations with companies such as Landini, Carraro, Kverneland, Hardi, TeeJet, and Aams-Salvarani. In addition, the laboratory is accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture to carry out certification tests for phytosanitary application equipment.

UMA’s main functions focus on three areas: teaching agronomic engineering students, transferring knowledge to producers and technicians, and experimentation and innovation in technologies applied to agriculture, disseminating results through conferences and journals. It also maintains close collaboration with companies such as Agromapping, Fede, Lechler, Syngenta, and Bayer, as well as reference centers like GRAP, CEMTRO, Neiker, IVIA, and DISAFA, ensuring projects with practical applications that align with the real needs of the sector.
