BTSF

A little bit about the project:

Better Training for Safer Food (BTSF) is an initiative of the European Commission, under the CHAFEA program, aimed at enhancing food safety through the technical training of professionals responsible for official inspection and control in the Member States.

Within this framework, the project is coordinated by the AINIA technology center, responsible for training European technicians in the inspection, verification, and calibration of phytosanitary application equipment. This training is essential to ensure that agricultural practices are carried out accurately, safely, and in compliance with European regulations.

  • Main objective

To improve food safety and environmental protection by professionalizing and harmonizing the inspection procedures for phytosanitary application equipment across the European Union.

  • Who is it addressed to?:

The BTSF program focuses on training in:

    • Inspectors and technicians from the Member States.
    • Competent authorities in official control.
    • Personnel specialized in the evaluation and certification of agricultural equipment.

Training facilitates the adoption of homogeneous and rigorous criteria throughout the EU.

  • Key areas of training:

I. Inspection of plant protection product application equipment

Detailed training in:

  • Technical evaluation of sprayers and agricultural machinery.
  • Detection of faults or deviations that may generate risks to health and the environment.
  • Verification of compliance with the requirements established by community regulations.

II. Machinery calibration and adjustment

The courses delve into calibration procedures focused on:

  • Optimize the applied dose.
  • Minimize drift and avoid unnecessary losses.
  • Improve the efficiency of treatments and reduce the impact on the environment.
III. Good practices and European harmonization

The project promotes common criteria in the EU, encouraging:

  • Responsible and controlled use of plant protection products.
  • The adoption of technical standards applicable in all Member States.
  • Continuous improvement of the quality of official inspections.
  • Contribution to the Agricultural Sector

BTSF provides direct benefits to the agri-food chain:

  • It strengthens the reliability and safety of food produced in the EU.
  • Reduces risks arising from incorrect application of plant protection products.
  • It promotes technologies and practices that favor environmental sustainability.
  • It facilitates the exchange of knowledge between European countries through specialized and continuous training.

A European commitment to quality and sustainability.

Through BTSF, the European Union promotes a safer, more standardized, and environmentally friendly agricultural production system. The initiative reinforces the role of technical training as a key element to ensure food quality and protect public health across Europe.
